Helpful Tips for Female Runners
For the both the beginner and the experienced runner alike, running has a ton of benefits. However, like any physical activity, running does come with its own risk of injury or condition due to overuse. What's more, did you know that female runners have a higher chance of developing certain foot conditions? Some of which can make it too painful to run at all.
The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons warns female runners that the combination of wearing narrow shoes at work and the repeated impact their feet take from running on hard surfaces can cause a painful nerve disorder called neuroma.
Dr. Samuel Nava, a member of ACFAS, explains that “We see neuromas quite often in younger professional women who wear high heels every day at work and also are active runners...it's a very stressful combination for their feet."
A neuroma is when the nerve located between the toes becomes inflamed and can produce tingling, burning pain. Patients often complain it feels as if something is stuck inside the ball of the foot.
Neuromas can develop in different areas of the foot but the most common is a Morton's neuroma, which develops at the base of the third and fourth toes. Symptoms begin gradually but will worsen over time if left untreated.
