Healthy Hiking Tips

Located here in the beautiful PNW we love getting outside and enjoying nature and we know that many of you do as well! So here’s some helpful info for all you fellow hikers out there!

The great outdoors can be unpredictable, and there’s nothing worse than having an adventure cut short due to injury. Hiking-related injuries range from minor concerns, such as blisters and bruises, to more serious conditions like stress fractures and ankle sprains. So, whether you’re out blazing a trail or taking the scenic route, there are some easy steps you can take to reduce the chance of injuries while you’re out hiking.

Here are five basic tips for your next foray in the wild:

  1. Protect your toes from blisters and toenails from bruises by wearing proper-fitting footwear.

  2. If you’re hiking in colder weather select material for socks that wick away moisture and insulate your feet ex. wool.

  3. Wear your boots or shoes in before your hike. Shoes that haven’t been worn in will increase your chance of blisters.

  4. Know the hiking route and options for getting medical assistance if needed.

  5. Carry supplies, such as a first-aid kit and wraps, to help protect and stabilize injured feet and ankles.

The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) also advises:

"It is important to seek evaluation by a foot and ankle surgeon for proper diagnosis and treatment because if an ankle fracture is not properly treated, it can lead to chronic pain, deformity, loss of blood flow and arthritis. If immediate access to a foot and ankle surgeon is not possible, patients should go to the emergency room first and follow up with a foot and ankle surgeon as soon as possible for a more thorough assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan."
